A few years back, after recovering from a serious motorcycle injury, I began counseling to retrain my brain, as it were. In our first 2 or 3 sessions, I was given a lessons on positive thinking vs. negative thinking and how that effects the mind, body & spirit. I knew that already though, I had just forgotten.
Bit by bit I was shown what my negative thoughts were and what I needed to work on. During all of this I kept coming across the same subject mater, Change Your Thoughts – Change Your Life by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Being in Balance: 9 Principles for Creating Habits to Match Your Desires by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer. Making Your Thoughts Work for You by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer; Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life, by Byron Katie, A Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are, by Byron Katie; The Secret by Rhonda Byrne; The Law of Attraction, by Michael Losier; Tao de Ching, by Stephen Mitchell; Optimal Thinking, by Rosalene Glickman, Ph.D.; The Power of Focus, by Jack Canfield, and the list goes on. So, like anything else that replicates or persists it’s self into my life; I researched the hell out of it.
The law of attraction is a very old law. In short, a person’s thoughts (conscious and unconscious), emotions, beliefs and actions are said to attract corresponding positive and negative experiences “through the resonance of their energetic vibration.” The “law of attraction” states “you get what you think about; your thoughts determine your experience.” Believers in the theory cite a famous quotation from the Buddha as proof that the law of attraction is factual. Gautama Buddha, “What you have become is the result of what you have thought”, is an expression of the idea that thoughts introduced into reality can attract like energy. It is also often alleged that the same idea can be found in beliefs as ancient as Hinduism. Many other methods have been derived from this law such as The Secret, The Sedona Method, The Work, MindMovies, The Mindstream Method, etc.
With all this information, I have surmised the following, for myself. Perhaps it will ring true for you as well.
I learned that we are in the simplest form, spiritual beings just having a human experience. Meaning that we are energy, or rather we are what we came from, God. (By God, I mean Supreme Being or whatever label you wish to give it.) I don’t know that I would take it to the extreme as some motivational speakers have, in that we are God, but rather we are a part of God; just as we are a part of our parents DNA in the physical form, we are a part of God in the spiritual form.
The law of attraction is really the law of attention. We get what we focus our attention on. So everything we talk about, what we feel, what we think about gets our attention. If our attention becomes focused on it, we get it. When you focus your attention, things expand and you see a larger reality of possible ways to get to what you want. Attention also works like tunnel vision. The things that you focus on can tune out all the other things from your perceptual filters.
To prove my point, try this exercise:
For 30 seconds look around the room for all the blue items around you. It is very important to focus and hold them in your mind.
(Do this step before reading any further, or you will miss the point.)
Now close your eyes and try to list off all the yellow items you remember.
Do you see how you can filter out things with your attention? Because you were focused on the blue (or maybe the bad in your life) you filtered out or overlooked the yellow (all the great things in your life). That is the basic mechanics of how the “Law of Attraction” really works.
So, what am I putting my attention on? First and foremost, good health through diet & exercise, writing to give of my knowledge, wealth through residual income, and just being.
Of all the information & books I read, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer; Byron Katie, Rhonda Byrne, Michael Losier; Stephen Mitchell; Rosalene Glickman, Ph.D.; Jack Canfield, the best over all author has been Dr. Wayne Dyer. I’ve purchased 3 of his audio books and have seen him on PBS; and he comes across as real people. He doesn’t offer or try to sell any program that will automatically charge your checking account every month, or try to guilt you into buying his books.
Chose to be happy.
