Law of Attraction

A few years back, after recovering from a serious motorcycle injury, I began counseling to retrain my brain, as it were.  In our first 2 or 3 sessions, I was given a lessons on positive thinking vs. negative thinking and how that effects the mind, body & spirit.  I knew that already though, I had just forgotten.

Bit by bit I was shown what my negative thoughts were and what I needed to work on.  During all of this I kept coming across the same subject mater, Change Your Thoughts – Change Your Life by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Being in Balance: 9 Principles for Creating Habits to Match Your Desires  by Dr. Wayne W. DyerMaking Your Thoughts Work for You by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer; Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life, by Byron Katie, A Thousand Names for Joy: Living in Harmony with the Way Things Are, by Byron Katie; The Secret by Rhonda Byrne; The Law of Attraction, by Michael Losier; Tao de Ching, by Stephen Mitchell; Optimal Thinking, by Rosalene Glickman, Ph.D.; The Power of Focus, by Jack Canfield, and the list goes on.  So, like anything else that replicates or persists it’s self into my life; I researched the hell out of it.

The law of attraction is a very old law.  In short, a person’s thoughts (conscious and unconscious), emotions, beliefs and actions are said to attract corresponding positive and negative experiences “through the resonance of their energetic vibration.”  The “law of attraction” states “you get what you think about; your thoughts determine your experience.”  Believers in the theory cite a famous quotation from the Buddha as proof that the law of attraction is factual. Gautama Buddha, “What you have become is the result of what you have thought”, is an expression of the idea that thoughts introduced into reality can attract like energy. It is also often alleged that the same idea can be found in beliefs as ancient as Hinduism.  Many other methods have been derived from this law such as The Secret, The Sedona Method, The Work, MindMovies, The Mindstream Method, etc.

With all this information, I have surmised the following, for myself.  Perhaps it will ring true for you as well.

I learned that we are in the simplest form, spiritual beings just having a human experience.  Meaning that we are energy, or rather we are what we came from, God.  (By God, I mean Supreme Being or whatever label you wish to give it.)  I don’t know that I would take it to the extreme as some motivational speakers have, in that we are God, but rather we are a part of God; just as we are a part of our parents DNA in the physical form, we are a part of God in the spiritual form.

The law of attraction is really the law of attention.  We get what we focus our attention on.  So everything we talk about, what we feel, what we think about gets our attention.  If our attention becomes focused on it, we get it.  When you focus your attention, things expand and you see a larger reality of possible ways to get to what you want. Attention also works like tunnel vision.  The things that you focus on can tune out all the other things from your perceptual filters.

To prove my point, try this exercise:

For 30 seconds look around the room for all the blue items around you. It is very important to focus and hold them in your mind.

(Do this step before reading any further, or you will miss the point.)

Now close your eyes and try to list off all the yellow items you remember.

Do you see how you can filter out things with your attention? Because you were focused on the blue (or maybe the bad in your life) you filtered out or overlooked the yellow (all the great things in your life). That is the basic mechanics of how the “Law of Attraction” really works.

So, what am I putting my attention on?  First and foremost, good health through diet & exercise, writing to give of my knowledge, wealth through residual income, and just being.

Of all the information & books I read, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer; Byron Katie, Rhonda Byrne,  Michael Losier; Stephen Mitchell;  Rosalene Glickman, Ph.D.; Jack Canfield, the best over all author has been Dr. Wayne Dyer.  I’ve purchased 3 of his audio books and have seen him on PBS; and he comes across as real people.  He doesn’t offer or try to sell any program that will automatically charge your checking account every month, or try to guilt you into buying his books.

 Chose to be happy.

Personal Finance

In effort to pass on useful ‘tools’ for taking control of your own financial picture, another really good book is The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future by Teri B. Clark. In our current economic climate, personal finance has become the priority. The need for sound financial guidance is critical for everyone In order to prevent financial disaster, or recover from one, it is imperative that we learn to control our money so our money doesn’t control us.

 The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future begins with the logical first step of creating and analyzing your personal budget. Then in the following chapter on banking, Teri Clark helps you navigate the banking system and gives sound instruction on keeping your accounts balanced so you to keep your budget in tact. It all works together.

 The chapters on saving, wealth management, insurance, and retirement are designed to help you keep more of your money and make it work for you. Then, Teri then addresses how to use credit wisely, how to avoid bankruptcy, and improving your credit history if you have already made some mistakes. (Trust me you can quickly recover a bad credit score, I did!)

 The chapter on buying a home is particularly relevant since so many are making their first foray into real estate with latest tax incentives. The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future is an invaluable primer for the first-time home buyer to navigate the terminology and processes involved in buying a home. I wish Teri had written this book in 2004 when I bought my home. I would have done a few things differently

 The appendices included in the back of the book, The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future , give you sample documents, checklists, and worksheets to manage every aspect of your finances.

Knowledge is power, and The Complete Personal Finance Handbook: Step-by-Step Instructions to Take Control of Your Financial Future gives you the power to correct or improve your financial future whether you are financially stable or financially troubled.

 Have a great year!

Start Over, Finish Rich

I don’t know if the recessions make millionaires, but as a bank loan counselor, Start Over, Finish Rich: 10 Steps to Get You Back on Track in 2010 by David Bach, makes sense and there is nothing in it that I disagree with.

David Bach is more motivational in Start Over, Finish Rich : 10 Steps to Get You Back on Track in 2010 , and has many excerpts from his other books that he has taken the best of and incorporated into 10 steps. If you are like most people, (including myself), even though you may not learn anything new from Start Over, Finish Rich : 10 Steps to Get You Back on Track in 2010 , the motivation that this book provides after losing faith in the system is more then worth the price of this book.

If you do not own The Automatic Millionaire , then buy, Start Over, Finish Rich: 10 Steps to Get You Back on Track in 2010 and follow it. It makes sense, it’s easy and gives you all the tools and material you need to finish rich. Having said that, if you already own The Automatic Millionaire and you don’t need a motivational kick in the pants to keep going during this recession, then my advice would be to do the plan from the Automatic Millionaire .   For added help, you might also check out the Automatic Millionaire Workbook as well.

The financial plan that David Bach presents in both books, are the best that I have come across and recommend daily to my clients. They both cover ten crucial moves you must make in 2010 to get back on track and recapture your dreams of a richer future. You’ll learn how to:

* Get out of debt
* Fix your credit
* Rebuild your 401k plan
* Improve your 529 Plan
* Take smart risks
* Reorganize your financial life for the high tech age
* Update your real estate plan
* Change your thinking about money
* Recommit to wealth

If you have a hard time finding time to read any book, Start Over, Finish Rich : 10 Steps to Get You Back on Track in 2010 by David Bach, is also available on audio CD.

This book also has an accompanying workbook that you can also purchase, and strongly recommend. The Finish Rich Workbook: Creating a Personalized Plan for a Richer Future , also by David Bach

Thank you for reading and I wish you a prosperous 2010!
